The Cockroach Problem in Ontario
Cockroaches are one of the most common and persistent pests in Ontario homes and businesses. The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is by far the most frequent species encountered indoors, thriving in the warm, moist environments found in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Oriental cockroaches and American cockroaches are also present, particularly in basements, drains, and commercial properties.
What makes cockroaches so challenging is their reproductive speed. A single German cockroach female can produce up to 400 offspring in her lifetime. Because each egg case (ootheca) contains 30 to 40 eggs and development takes only about 60 days, a small infestation can explode into thousands within a few months. By the time you see cockroaches during the day, the population is typically well-established.
Serious Health Hazards
Cockroaches are not just unsightly — they are a documented health hazard. They carry bacteria including E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus on their bodies and legs, contaminating food, dishes, and kitchen surfaces as they forage.
